Tiles & Tales

“Everyone sees the unseen in proportion to the clarity of his heart, and that depends upon how much he has polished it. Whoever has polished it more sees more – more unseen forms become manifest to him.”

Jalaluddin Rumi

Seventeen people
Arrived in style.
Working with recycled tiles,
Breaking them with smiles.
Clang! The tools hit glazed surfaces,
Clink! The tiles broke.
Pareidolia kicked in,
Flowers, insects, birds set in sky and earth
Many artists move in a space dearth.
Tiles set, hammered to level
Cleaned and sponged to bevel.
Connected with oxide yellow, green and red
All was done as said.
Masons, architects, students,
We worked and ate together.
A beautiful ensemble,
At ‘Open House’, and experience untethered.

‘Tiles & Tales’ is a mosaic flooring workshop, conducted under ‘Pattarai’.  Pattarai-Site as Classroom is a platform to bridge the gap between academics and application, through hands-on learning experience in an on-going construction at site ‘Andari Illu’.

Andari Illu (Open House) is a space created by two doctors Dr. S V Kameshari and Dr. Surya Prakash Vinjamuri who runs the ‘Life-Health Reinforcement Group’ (Life-HRG). It is a house accessible to ALL, predominantly for youngsters preparing for competitive exams and people in need seeking food and shelter during the day. Along with a gynecology clinic functioning on the first floor level.

The seating space is part of the value addition of Andari Illu, which is a ‘healing space’ for people in need for emotional comfort and healing. As part of ‘Pattarai’, themed as ‘Tiles and Tales’, the workshop consists of mosaic flooring to create nature-imbibed design space. It includes arranging broken tiles pieces into arrangements of leaves, flowers, clouds, soil to create a holistic form of nature-based elements.

It’s my first experience with mosaic tiles. I had a hands on experience arranging and making a composition out of broken pieces which are random. The colours of oxide with the tiles contrast and gives a beautiful mosaic. It’s a amazing experience.

  2. This is a great experience getting in touch with real work and we get to do everything there, it felt like learning something in a involved and most understanding way on the site.

  3. It was so fun doing it it was my first time experience but I enjoyed a lot. What excited me mostly was how we broke the tiles into different patterns and make a nice composition out of it and filling it with oxide it was very good experience being a first timer doing mosaic i didn’t feel stuck we had nice help.

  4. fun experience , learned alot. it was a new experience to work with tiles . loved the experience. interesting process

  5. First time working with oxide flooring material and mosaic tile pattern. It was interesting to see the mixing process for the oxide flooring. Making patterns with the tiles that were smashed/broken and placing them in a way which fit was a calming process. Getting to apply the oxide made me aware of the weight and consistency of the material and how it is a skill that requires experience to be able to master and and execute to perfection. Learnt lots, had fun, broke a sweat and had a great experience.

It is a great opportunity to be here on site
Where i got interact with more people and got hands on experience with mosaic flooring from breaking tiles to laying them collecting bits of tiles and placing them at place

The tiles were broken for purpose and purposefully shaping them as flowers is a great thought

Like it would be a great motive for people who use this place like it’s
    BROKEN BUT BEAUTIFUL
